About the event
The walk crosses nine lifestyle farms where the ‘Ngawhakangutu’ wetlands (commonly known as the ‘Te Hapua Wetlands’) are located. These wetlands have undergone extensive restoration over the last 35 years, with continuing works in progress. The western extent includes a loop, exiting over a board walk, and then on to view a narrow neck of the largest wetland area. A short climb up an elevated dune provides magnificent views of the wetlands and the coast. We then head east to view the ‘Pateke Lagoons’. Back out to Te Hapua Road we cross into the next property along a small section of an old bridle trail which passes above the adjacent wetland. An eastward loop is then undertaken where the wetlands are captivated between steeper dunes, after which Te Hapua Road is crossed for the last time back into the western wetland area. A board walk takes you into wetland proper, before exiting to Te Hapua Road and back to the starting point approx. 6.6km. See the attached map.
Plenty of parking up the drive in the property of Sarah Milne and Paul Boyack where we start the walk.
