The Great Te Horo Road Rai$e Walking Series

Easter Sunday to 5th May, 6 consecutive Sundays!

Join us on a series of walks up and over local farms and into areas not normally open to the public!

We've had two walks now and they've been a huge success: lots of interest, great locations and amazing weather!

Each walk is around 6km to 10km or do a shorter 5km option.

$15 each per walk, kids under 15 go free.

All walks start at 10am, rain or shine!

Book now or bring cash on the day.

All proceeds go to Te Horo Hall Society Fundraising. And a huge thanks to the local farmers supporting these events!

Walk 1 - Pilet & Cobb Farm, Arcus Road, 10am, Sunday 31st March: COMPLETED

Walk 2 - 120 Te Horo Beach Road, 10am, Sunday 7th April: COMPLETED

Walk 3 - 276 Te Hapua Road, 10am Start, Sunday 14 th April

Starting at 276 Te Hapua Road, there is plenty of parking up the drive in the property of Sarah Milne and Paul Boyack where we start the walk.  It then crosses the lifestyle farms of Paul Arcus, Paul Crafer and Ian Jensen, where the ‘Ngawhakangutu’ wetlands, commonly known as the ‘Te Hapua Wetlands’ have undergone extensive restoration over the last 35 years, with continuing works in progress. A short climb up the sand dune hills gives you magnificent views of the wetlands and the coast.  We then cross through the horse farm of Ruth Wallis and Matt Cronin out to Pukenamu Road along a short distance before turning into Puruaha Road, Mahurenga Lane and out to the beach. We then head south along the beach for a breathtaking 3km, past the famous Pink Stump, to the beach access for Te Hapua Road.  A short distance along Te Hapua Road takes you back to the start for a cup of tea at Sarah and Paul’s place. Approx 7.6km. Click here to see the map.

Walk 4 - 294 Old Hautere Road, 10am Sunday 21st April

Starting at the Empson Farm paddock on the corner of Old Hautere Road and Otaki Gorge Road, we proceed along the farm race past the cow shed, then along past the large lowland bush area rarely visited and now QE11 covenanted. Follow the markers where you will pass the historic heritage cottage built in 1892, which was the old Hautere Cross Post Office from 1902 to 1924, until you reach Otaki Gorge Road. Cross the road carefully and then proceed along another farm track with magnificent views overlooking the Otaki River.  You will then enter another QE11 covenanted bush area with historic stone walls and huge old Totara Trees.  Continue along the farm track past a derelict house with a gruesome history, across Otaki Gorge Road again and through more farm tracks back to the start. Approx 6km.

Walk 5 - Mansell Farm, 708 Otaki Gorge Road, 10am Sunday 28th April

Meet at the Mansell Woolshed. This is a more energetic walk, along slowly elevating farm tracks, in hill country.  You will pass a GeoNet Station and be rewarded with magnificent views across the Te Horo Plains, Otaki River and out to Kapiti Island and the South Island. You will then continue along well formed tracks gently downhill back to the start. The total loop walk is 6.7 km involving a climb and descent of 273m, passing the GeoNet Station along the way.  A shorter walk is to the GeoNet Station and return which is 5.6 km and a climb and descent of 150m.  Refreshments will be available at the Woolshed at the end of your walk.

Walk 6 - Faith Farm Milk Station – 843 Old State Highway 1, Te Horo, 10am Sunday 5th May

Meet at 843 Old SH1, Te Horo (Faith Farm Milk Station), drive down the gravel driveway to the left of the Milk Station and head towards the black and white cowshed building.  There is ample parking beside the cowshed. The track follows undulating farm races, tracks, and sand hills (complete with sand quarry) with great views of the surrounding farmland and out to Kapiti Island. This walk is approx. 6km taking about 1hr 45mins to complete. There is a shorter option for those not wanting to walk so far.

On the walk:

  • Wear strong footwear to avoid injury from uneven ground.
  • Walking poles optional
  • Carry an additional layer of clothing for exposed areas and changeable weather.
  • Bring a water bottle and snack.
